Trump Threatens Further Cuts to Harvard University's $3 Billion Appropriation

Published at May 27, 2025 02:25 pm
On the 26th, US President Trump once again issued a threat to cut funding to Harvard University, stating that if Harvard does not submit a list of foreign students, the federal government will consider cutting the school's $3 billion appropriation and reallocating the funds to vocational schools across the country.

He posted on the social media platform "Truth Social" saying that he is considering taking away Harvard University's $3 billion appropriation from the "very anti-Semitic" Harvard and distributing it to vocational schools nationwide.

In another post, Trump also mentioned that the federal government is still waiting for Harvard University to submit the list of foreign students to determine how many "radical lunatics and troublemakers" should not be allowed to re-enter the United States. Harvard has been "very slow" in providing these documents.

The day before, Trump demanded that Harvard University submit the "names and nationalities" information of all international students.

On the 22nd of this month, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security announced the cancellation of Harvard University's qualification for the Student and Exchange Visitor Program, prohibiting the school from enrolling international students. Harvard University immediately sued the Trump administration over this policy. A judge in the U.S. District Court for the District of Massachusetts issued a temporary restraining order on the 23rd, requiring that the "status quo" be maintained before a hearing is held.

The prohibition on Harvard University enrolling international students has become the latest move by the Trump administration to suppress the school. On April 14th, Harvard University rejected the Trump administration's request for significant reforms to its management structure, hiring, and admission policies. The Trump administration subsequently announced that it would freeze $2.2 billion in multi-year appropriations and $60 million in multi-year contract payments to the school.
