Iranian Official: Iran Ready to Make Concessions on Nuclear Program if US Meets Demands

(Iran, 23rd) The Iranian side stated that in negotiations with the United States, Tehran is prepared to make concessions on its nuclear program in exchange for the US lifting sanctions and recognizing Iran's right to enrich uranium. This move aims to avoid a US military strike.

An Iranian senior official told Reuters that after two rounds of negotiations, the differences between the two sides remain significant, and even on the scope and sequencing of lifting the US's stringent sanctions, no agreement has been reached.

Reuters reported on Sunday (Feb 22) for the first time that since last week’s talks, Iran has been proposing new concessions. Analysts believe this move shows Tehran is trying to maintain diplomatic efforts and avoid a large-scale US strike.

The report quoted an Iranian official as saying that Tehran would seriously consider sending half of its highly enriched uranium abroad, diluting the remainder, and participating in the creation of a regional uranium enrichment consortium—a concept that has been proposed several times in diplomatic negotiations involving Iran over the years.

The official said Iran would exchange this for US recognition of Iran's “peaceful nuclear enrichment” rights under an agreement, which would also include lifting economic sanctions on Iran.

In addition, in the negotiations aimed at resolving the decades-long dispute over Tehran’s nuclear activities, Iran has already offered US companies the opportunity to participate as contractors in Iran’s vast oil and natural gas industries.

The official said, “In the economic plan currently being negotiated, the United States would also have the chance to make major investments in Iran’s oil sector and secure tangible economic benefits.”

The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the report.
