(Miri, 5th) Miri Member of Parliament, Chiew Choon Man, stated that as the MP for Miri, he has taken various measures and efforts to ensure the continued upgrading of Miri Hospital.
He said that over the years he has visited Miri Hospital multiple times, including after the completion of the new hospital building a few months ago. After discussions with the director and officials of Miri Hospital, several issues and needs have been identified to ensure that the hospital can serve as a state-level facility providing various specialist services.
"Miri Hospital needs cardiology services due to its distance from Kuching Sarawak General Hospital. This service is very necessary to meet the needs of the people in the northern region of Sarawak. Additionally, there is a lack of ICT equipment and other devices, and there is also a need for additional CT scanners and digital fluoroscopes to make the diagnostic process more efficient."
He stated that a few months ago, he donated 20 laptops to Miri Hospital. Moreover, he has raised these issues in parliament, including requesting the Malaysian Ministry of Health to provide specialized services such as cardiology in the new Miri Hospital building.
"Given Sarawak's vast geography, Miri Hospital needs to provide cardiology services for the people of Northern Sarawak. Compared to Peninsular Malaysia, the travel time to Sarawak state hospital is longer due to its further distance. With increasing population, this demand becomes more urgent."
He pointed out that in the latest developments, the Ministry of Health has included the development of an invasive Cardiac Lab (ICL) at Miri Hospital in the 2025 rolling plan of the 12th Malaysia Plan, estimated to cost RM 14.5 million. He has also conveyed this matter to the Ministry of Economic Affairs to approve funding in the 2025 budget.
"The Deputy Minister of Health, Dato Lukanisman, informed yesterday that the procurement of ICL devices for Miri Hospital has been approved. Preliminary work will begin in the second quarter of 2025, and implementation is expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2026. After the completion of this project and with the increase of cardiologists, Miri Hospital will be able to provide the urgently needed cardiology services."
He said that by adding CT scanners and digital fluoroscopes, Miri Hospital will be able to improve the quality of medical services for the people of Miri and its surrounding areas.
"I would like to express my deepest gratitude to the federal government, especially the Ministry of Health, for their efforts to meet the needs of Miri Hospital. I am very grateful to the Deputy Minister for his dedication to ensuring that the people of Northern Sarawak have access to the best medical services, and I also appreciate the efforts made by the management of Miri Hospital."
He stated that as the MP for Miri, he will continue to strive for better medical infrastructure needs for our people.
