The Chinese reality show ‘Goodbye Lover 4’ attracted much discussion when it aired last year, and among the controversies were singer Li Xingliang and his wife Mai Lin’s interactions. Although it has been a year since recording, on the 13th, Li Xingliang suddenly posted a lengthy message on social media, admitting that after participating in the show, both he and his wife have been deeply plagued by cyberbullying.
Li Xingliang originally thought that, since he wasn’t very famous and his wife was a non-celebrity, they wouldn’t attract much attention. However, after the show aired, he and Mai Lin became the focal point, followed by an onslaught of rumors. Some even impersonated acquaintances to spread false stories, causing tremendous pressure on him and his family. “My mind felt like mush. Outsiders see us seemingly continuing life and work as normal, but only we know inside we’ve long been riddled with wounds. On countless nights, Mai Lin and I sat hopelessly weeping on the living room couch.”
Li Xingliang revealed that after the show, he and Mai Lin worked hard to change their communication patterns and restarted their relationship, thinking that everything would naturally clear up after the show ended. Unexpectedly, he discovered some attacks had moved beyond the realm of entertainment and developed into organized, premeditated online harassment. “Every time I have a job opportunity, there’s a group of people who report and file complaints to the authorities 24/7, maliciously, and even doxx and harass our collaborators and friends.” In response, he decided to take legal action: “When speech crosses the boundaries of reason, hurts my family, and disrupts our lives, I will take all legitimate measures, including legal means, to resolutely protect my rights and my family’s peace.”
