Chinese singer Yang Kun once did a rearranged cover of Taiwanese band EggPlantEgg’s signature song “浪子回头 (The Prodigal Returns)” on the show “Singer 2019”. Years later, video clips of this performance have resurfaced online and been mocked by netizens: “Review: Yang Kun—Let the Pig Turn Back. Can’t stand not listening for a day, but listening makes you uncomfortable for a whole day.” This unexpectedly reignited discussion about the old performance, with the original singer Ah Bin personally joining in the comments, directly pointing out that the adaptation was done without the creator’s authorization.
Back then, Yang Kun reinterpreted “浪子回头” in “Singer 2019” with a new arrangement and altered some parts of the vocals. With the performance clip now recirculating, large numbers of Taiwanese netizens have flocked to the comment sections to discuss it, and many are critical of the adapted version. The most notable comment came from Ah Bin himself weighing in. Ah Bin stated: “They didn’t ask the creators for authorization at all, just directly adapted and filmed, and I publicly condemned this back then, but they still went ahead and aired it.” Seeing the clip again years later, he directly added: “[I] just have to vent—serves them right for sounding bad.”
According to Ah Bin, the show did not obtain permission from the song’s creators before adapting and broadcasting “浪子回头”. He also publicly expressed his dissatisfaction at the time. However, the full details of the authorization dispute should be based on the explanations from both parties and the copyright holders.
