Thailand to Tax Imported Online Goods Starting This Year – Tax Applies Even to Items Worth 1 Baht

(Bangkok, 2nd) Starting from January 1, Thailand has officially implemented a new tax policy for imported goods purchased online, abolishing the previous tax exemption for goods valued at not more than 1,500 baht. Now, any imported item valued above 1 baht will be subject to import tax.

According to reports by news agencies, Deputy Government Spokesperson Rachida said on the 1st that this measure aims to create a fairer competitive environment, improve the efficiency of national tax collection, and enhance the quality as well as compliance standards of imported goods.

She explained that under the new policy, imported online shopping goods must be declared and subject to value-added tax and import duty from as low as 1 baht. This move will help narrow the gap between Thai domestic businesses—especially small and medium-sized enterprises—and the previously untaxed low-priced foreign imports.

She pointed out that prices for some goods may be adjusted, with the prices of clothing and apparel likely to rise by about 20% to 30%, while other items will depend on the applicable tax rate.

She also stated that the government has introduced supporting measures to ensure the convenience of online shopping. Currently, about 97% of imported goods already have relevant taxes and fees pre-calculated and included in their prices on e-commerce platforms, allowing consumers to complete payment in a single transaction without needing to pay tax separately during customs clearance.

Regarding consumer protection, she mentioned that customs authorities have strengthened cooperation with major e-commerce platforms such as Lazada, Shopee, TikTok, SHEIN, and TEMU to enhance product verification. Products that do not meet the certification standards of the Thai Industrial Standards Institute or requirements of the Food and Drug Administration, as well as illegal goods like electronic cigarettes, will be required to be delisted and prohibited from import.

She emphasized that this measure is not intended to increase the burden on consumers but rather to create a fairer and more transparent tax system, better adapt to the development of the digital economy, and enhance the safety and compliance of online consumption.
