The Sri Lankan Disaster Management Centre reported on the 5th that, as of that evening, extreme weather caused by tropical cyclone “Dithwa” has resulted in 607 deaths and affected more than 2 million people in the country, with 214 people still missing.
According to the report, the extreme weather has led to the complete destruction of over 4,000 houses and partial damage to more than 60,000 houses across Sri Lanka.
On the 5th, the Sri Lankan Meteorological Department issued a warning that due to the influence of the northeast monsoon, many parts of the country will experience heavy rainfall from the 9th to the 11th. On the evening of the 5th, the National Building Research Organisation of Sri Lanka issued the country's highest-level (Level 3) landslide warning for five areas: Kandy, Kegalle, Kurunegala, Matale, and Nuwara Eliya.
