Syria's Constitution and Parliament to Suspend Operations for 3 Months

The Syrian transitional government announced that Syria will suspend the operations of its constitution and parliament for 3 months.

AFP reported that on the 12th, Syrian transitional government spokesperson Arnault said that during the three-month transitional period, Syria's constitution and parliament will suspend operations, and a judicial and human rights committee will be established to review the constitution and then propose amendments. He stated that Syria will establish the rule of law, "all those who have committed crimes against the Syrian people will be tried according to the law."

The current Syrian constitution dates back to 2012 and does not designate Islam as the state religion. Opposition forces, under the leadership of the Islamist radical group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, toppled the Assad regime, which had ruled Syria for 24 years, through a lightning campaign lasting more than ten days, and the whole country celebrated. Assad is reported to have fled to Russia with his family, and Syria's transitional government caretaker Prime Minister Bashir has taken over power and will lead the transitional government until March 1 next year.

Most Syrian Muslims are Sunnis, while former President Assad's family belongs to the Alawite sect, a minority group. When asked about religious and personal freedoms, Arnault said, "We respect Syria's religious and cultural diversity," which will remain unchanged.

The current political vacuum brings uncertainty to the future of the Syrian people. U.S. Secretary of State Blinken, who is visiting Jordan, on Thursday called for an inclusive transition in Syria and the establishment of a "Syria that will not become a base for terrorism or pose a threat to its neighbors."

Blinken's trip to Jordan is the first stop of his Middle East diplomatic tour. U.S. State Department spokesperson Miller said Blinken will use this opportunity to express U.S. support for "a Syrian-led, inclusive transition process to establish a responsible and representative government."
