Miri Marina Beach Covered with Trash, Citizens Urge Government to Strengthen Enforcement and Cleanliness Management

(Miri, 17th) Recently, Miri Marina Beach has faced severe pollution, with a large number of plastic bottles and various types of trash washed ashore by huge waves, amounting to tens of thousands of pieces, leaving the beach environment in disarray.

Initial analysis suggests that the trash was washed onto the beach by huge waves, potentially originating from the upstream and downstream of Miri River, reflecting a significant lack of local waste management and public environmental awareness. The government should enhance education and enforcement efforts.

This pollution incident has attracted widespread attention from citizens, with many criticizing some members of the public for lacking environmental awareness and carelessly discarding trash, leading to worsening marine pollution. Citizens urge the government to intensify promotional educational efforts and strengthen enforcement to curb illegal dumping, while improving the waste management mechanism to prevent similar occurrences.

Additionally, citizens expressed strong dissatisfaction with the Miri City Council’s Health Committee’s decision last month to no longer provide large garbage bins, believing this decision exacerbates the waste problem, leading to garbage accumulation and deteriorating sanitary conditions across the city. Many citizens demand the City Council re-evaluate the waste collection policy to ensure urban cleanliness.

Citizens hope the relevant authorities will take action promptly to clean up the trash and devise long-term plans to preserve Miri's natural environment and tourism image.
