An accident occurred during a racing event held in the Kotamobagu area of North Sulawesi Province, Indonesia, on the 9th. A participating vehicle veered off the track and crashed into the spectators, resulting in 7 fatalities and 9 serious injuries.
According to China News Service, the involved driver was participating in the 2026 Kotamobagu Championship’s open category with this car. Indonesian media reported that after crossing the finish line, the vehicle swerved off the track and crashed into spectators near the finish line. After the accident, the event was immediately suspended, and staff along with relevant authorities started the rescue operation.
This straight-line speed race started on August 6, with a total of 337 contestants, and was originally scheduled to conclude on the 9th. The event organizing committee representative stated that the organizer will take responsibility for the consequences of the accident and will cover the medical expenses for those still hospitalized.
The competition used a temporary track located on public roads. On-site footage showed a large number of spectators gathered on both sides of the track, standing very close to the track, with no visible protective barriers such as tires or concrete on either side.
