Foreign Minister Flies to Myanmar for Talks with Leaders

Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan departed today (9th) for Myanmar to hold talks with the country’s top leader and its foreign minister.

On Thursday morning (October 9th), Mohamad Hasan posted on his Facebook, saying: “Heading to Myanmar for meetings and exchanges with (Acting) President Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, Prime Minister U Nyo Tun Aung, and Foreign Minister U Than Swe.”

He mentioned that recent violations of the ceasefire agreement have undermined efforts towards a peace plan and have further worsened the situation.

He also attached several photos in his post showing himself at the Royal Malaysian Air Force base, stating that he was ready to depart for Myanmar’s administrative center, Naypyidaw.

Malaysia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs had earlier confirmed that Mohamad Hasan’s planned trip to Myanmar on September 19th was postponed due to unavoidable circumstances.

On the other hand, the Foreign Ministry confirmed in a statement on Thursday (9th) that Mohamad Hasan is undertaking a one-day working visit to Naypyidaw.

The ministry pointed out that this visit aligns with the outcomes and resolutions of the 58th ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting to be held in July 2025.

The ASEAN Chair’s Special Envoy to Myanmar, Tan Sri Osman Hashim, will accompany Mohamad Hasan on this trip.

During this working visit, Mohamad Hasan will pay a courtesy call on Min Aung Hlaing, who is also Chairman of Myanmar’s State Administration Council (SSPC), as well as Prime Minister and Minister of National Planning U Nyo Tun Aung.

He will also hold talks with U Than Swe.

When meeting with Myanmar’s senior leaders, Mohamad Hasan will focus on urging the comprehensive and meaningful implementation of the ASEAN Five-Point Consensus (5PC), particularly calling for cessation of violence, provision of unrestricted humanitarian aid, and promotion of inclusive dialogue involving all stakeholders in Myanmar.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs indicated that discussions are also expected to cover the topic of Myanmar’s planned elections.

The ministry emphasized that Malaysia is engaging with Myanmar’s State Administration Council in its capacity as ASEAN Chair with the aim of supporting peace, stability, and development in Myanmar.

Malaysia remains committed to promoting a Myanmar-owned and Myanmar-led solution to the crisis, with the full support of ASEAN.

This working visit also demonstrates ASEAN’s firm commitment to promoting peace, stability, and long-term solutions in Myanmar.

As the ASEAN Chair for 2025, Malaysia will continue to engage with all stakeholders in Myanmar, promoting national peace and reconciliation through inclusive and sustainable approaches.
