Monday (August 17) marked the 100th anniversary of the birth of the late former CCP General Secretary Jiang Zemin. On that day, officials held a commemorative conference at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing in the morning. Former Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao and other retired leaders attended the event. However, Hu Jintao, the former CCP General Secretary who will turn 84 at the end of the year, did not appear.
Several retired CCP leaders attended the commemorative conference for Jiang Zemin’s 100th birthday at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing. According to footage from CCTV News, former CCP elders present included former Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao (turning 84 next month); former chairman of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) Jia Qinglin (86); former Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress Zhang Dejiang (turning 80 at the end of the year); former CPPCC Chairman Yu Zhengsheng (81); former Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress Li Zhanshu (turning 76 at the end of this month); former CPPCC Chairman Wang Yang (71); former Vice Premier Li Lanqing (94); former Vice President Zeng Qinghong (87); former Politburo Standing Committee member Li Changchun (82); former CCDI Secretary He Guoqiang (turning 83 at the end of the year); former Secretariat Secretary Liu Yunshan (79); former Vice President Wang Qishan (78); and former Vice Premier Zhang Gaoli (turning 80 at the end of the year).
After Jiang Zemin passed away at the end of 2022, Hu Jintao became the highest-ranking surviving CCP elder. At the closing ceremony of the 20th National Congress of the CCP in 2022, Hu left the venue midway; officials explained at the time that he was feeling unwell. The last time Hu was seen in public was in December 2022, at the time of Jiang Zemin’s death, when he went to the hospital to bid farewell to Jiang.
