Kuching, 10th -- The Sarawak Disaster Management Committee is prepared to face the arrival of the northeast monsoon season.
Deputy Premier of Sarawak and Chairman of the Disaster Management Committee, Datuk Amar Douglas, stated that a total of 7,507 personnel and officials from the security forces and related agencies are ready to be mobilized to tackle the northeast monsoon season.
The Sarawak Brigade of the Royal Malaysia Police mobilized a total of 1,406 personnel, the Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department has 1,462 members, the Sarawak Civil Defense Department has 2,759 members, and the Sarawak Social Welfare Department has 1,880 members.
Douglas made these remarks at a press conference after chairing the Sarawak Disaster Management Committee meeting today.
He expressed satisfaction with the preparations made, as the members of the Sarawak Disaster Committee have rich experience in dealing with the annually recurring northeast monsoon.
Moreover, he stated that in preparation for potential floods, they have mobilized all relevant units and agencies, readying 214 boats, 3 motorboats, 260 four-wheel-drive vehicles, 78 trucks, 32 ambulances, 152 motorcycles, two buses, helicopters, 4 drones, and 15 drones.
As for the forward bases, he explained that Sarawak has 31 disaster front bases, a disaster storage warehouse in Kota Samarahan, and two small disaster storage warehouses.
He added that these 31 disaster front bases are crucial for Sarawak, as they can store food to be distributed in the event of an incident.
Meanwhile, he also mentioned that they have collaborated with the Malaysian International Humanitarian Radio Organization (MHO) to provide communication access to the inland areas facing floods, operating a radio station outside the city.
He added that drone technology is also used to obtain the latest images of the flood-affected areas and the extent of the areas impacted by the floods.
Dato Sri Hajah Fatimah Abdullah was also present at the meeting.
