Sarawak Benefits from Green Energy Transition, Effectively Reducing Dependence on Diesel

(Kuching, 5th) Sarawak currently holds an advantageous position in the energy sector, thanks to its strategic shift towards green energy, which has effectively reduced its reliance on fossil fuels such as diesel.

Deputy Prime Minister Dato’ Amar Fadillah Yusof stated that Sarawak's government, by taking early initiatives in developing alternative energy, has gained a significant advantage in the face of global oil supply and price uncertainties.

According to him, approximately 60% of Sarawak's electricity currently comes from hydroelectric power, supplemented by solar, natural gas, and coal power generation.

"The foresight of Sarawak's leadership enabled the early initiation of the transition towards green energy. Compared to other regions, this has made Sarawak's energy situation more stable and favorable."

Fadillah Yusof, who is also the Member of Parliament for Petra Jaya, said in an interview with the media last night when attending an Aidilfitri blessing event at Kampung Semariang Batu that this approach not only ensures the stability of domestic energy supply but also supports the development of the state's business and industrial sectors.

He explained that the supply of petroleum, including diesel, is still regulated by Petronas and will continue to be managed according to current demand.

However, he cautioned that if it becomes necessary to procure from abroad, costs will remain a challenge due to rising global oil prices and increased logistics expenses for shipping to East Malaysia.

Compared to Sarawak, Fadillah pointed out, Sabah still faces challenges, as its electricity generation is highly dependent on diesel and thus susceptible to price fluctuations and supply constraints.

He emphasized that Sarawak's green energy development model should serve as a reference for strengthening national energy security.

He concluded by stating that the government will continue to monitor the entire energy supply chain to ensure stable and sufficient energy supply nationwide.
