Han Zhanwu, a member of the Party Leadership Group and Deputy Director of the China National Tobacco Administration, is suspected of serious violations of discipline and law, and is currently under disciplinary review and supervisory investigation by the Central Commission for Discipline Inspection and the National Supervisory Commission.
On Sunday (October 12), the website of the Central Commission for Discipline Inspection and National Supervisory Commission released this information.
According to public records, Han Zhanwu is 59 years old, and has previously served as Director and Party Secretary of the China National Machinery & Equipment Tendering Corporation, Director of Department of Personnel and Education at the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, and Director of the General Office of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology. In April 2020, Han Zhanwu took up the role of Deputy Director and Party Leadership Group member of the China National Tobacco Administration, until the current investigation.
The China National Tobacco Administration is an institution directly under the State Council. Han Zhanwu is the highest-ranking deputy director in the administration, and has been out of the public eye for nearly a month. According to Caixin Media, Han Zhanwu conducted research in Jiangsu's tobacco sector from September 10 to 11, which was his last public appearance before his official downfall.
Since an anti-corruption drive swept through China's tobacco system in 2021, more than 10 officials have been investigated to date. Prior to Han Zhanwu, six current or former leaders of the China National Tobacco Administration have already fallen.
Ling Chengxing, the former Party Secretary and Director of the China National Tobacco Administration, was investigated in October 2023, and in May this year faced a first-instance verdict, receiving a 16-year sentence for taking bribes and abuse of power by employees of state-owned companies.
Xu Lin, Deputy Director of the China National Tobacco Administration, was reported to have been investigated while in office on May 25 this year.
