(United States, 23rd)—U.S. President Trump has announced that the U.S. Navy will build a larger, faster, and '100 times more powerful' than existing naval warships—the new “Trump-class” next-generation battleships. These heavily-armed new battleships will become the core of the U.S. Navy’s 'Golden Fleet,' solidifying American naval dominance.
Reuters reports that on Monday (December 22), at a press conference at Mar-a-Lago in Florida, Trump said the U.S. Navy would first build two battleships named after himself, the 'Trump-class,' and then quickly build another eight, with the total number eventually reaching 20 to 25.
Historically, new U.S. warships named after a president are usually only bestowed upon former presidents.
Trump said the new battleships will have a displacement of between 30,000 and 40,000 tons, equipped with missiles, naval guns, as well as weapons still under development such as laser weapons and hypersonic missiles.
When reporters asked whether the construction of new battleships was aimed at countering China, Trump declined to comment directly.
U.S. Secretary of the Navy Feilan said the tonnage and firepower of the Trump-class battleships 'will surpass that of any warship ever built in history,' and that all components will be manufactured in every state across America.
He said the new battleships would not only be equipped with 'the largest caliber naval guns in U.S. warship history,' but also with sea-launched cruise missiles capable of carrying nuclear warheads. The first new battleship will be named USS Defiant.
