(Kuching, 24th) A 67-year-old man believed a part-time job advertisement on Facebook and ended up falling into an online scam, losing as much as RM111,245.

Kuching District Police Chief Alexson Naga Chabu stated that the victim was browsing Facebook when he saw a page called “RWESHOPS” posting an ad for high-reward part-time jobs, claiming commissions could be earned by completing tasks.

He said the victim was attracted by the promise of easy money, subsequently registered to join, and was arranged to carry out a series of online tasks.

“The scam group instructed the victim to make multiple transfers in order to complete tasks and receive commissions.

“The victim mistakenly believed the scheme was genuine and reliable, so he followed instructions and made 24 transfers to six different bank accounts.

“By the time he realized he had been deceived, the total loss had reached RM111,245.”

Alexson issued a statement regarding this yesterday (June 23).

He said police are currently investigating under Section 420 of the Penal Code (cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property). Upon conviction, offenders can be sentenced to imprisonment for not less than one year and not more than ten years, as well as whipping and a fine.

He urged the public to remain vigilant, especially towards social media ads promoting high-paying part-time jobs, and to maintain a skeptical attitude.

At the same time, he reminded the public to verify suspicious bank accounts and phone numbers before making any financial transaction through the police's official “Semak Mule” website: https://semakmule.rmp.gov.my.

In addition, if you suspect you have been scammed, call the National Scam Response Center (NSRC) hotline 997 within 24 hours to seek assistance and increase your chances of recovering funds.

If the public encounter any suspicious scam activity, they can also report to the Sarawak Commercial Crime Investigation Department (JSJK) hotline at 011-62890089, or email kjsjkswk@rmp.gov.my.
