(Kuching, 12th) After officially acquiring MASwings, Sarawak will have its own airline, named "Borneo Air (AirBorneo)", officially launching its air journey.
Following the signing of the sales and purchase agreement (SPA) between the Sarawak government and Malaysian Aviation Group (MAG) at a top local hotel, Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari today announced the establishment of "Borneo Air (AirBorneo).
"AirBorneo is prepared to balance connectivity, affordable ticket prices, and economic benefits."
Abang Johari pointed out that as a full-service carrier (FSC), AirBorneo can significantly enhance the passenger experience through excellent in-flight service.
"This will emphasize Sarawak's regional reputation as a quality tourism destination."
Premier Abang Johari said this while attending the signing ceremony of the sales and purchase agreement today.
State Secretary of Sarawak Datuk Amar Abu Bakar signed on behalf of the Sarawak government, and he is also the chairman of Borneo Air, while the Malaysian Aviation Group was represented by its group managing director Datuk Ismail.
Abang Johari also said that this strategic step taken by the Sarawak government aims to position Sarawak as the aviation hub for Borneo and a gateway to ASEAN, further opening doors for domestic and international opportunities for Sarawak, thereby establishing connectivity with domestic and international destinations, bringing greater benefits to the Sarawak community and business circles.
He also stated that while Borneo Air expands its flight services, it will maintain its rural air service. Hence, it will establish strategic partnerships with its partners and achieve code-sharing agreements with other airlines, including Malaysia Airlines, to further expand its flight network and enhance Sarawak's global aviation connectivity.
Of course, after completing the signing of the sales and purchase agreement, he said there is still a need to work closely with the Malaysian Aviation Group to ensure the optimal use of the group's expertise to maintain service quality and operational efficiency, thus reducing unnecessary obstacles and enhancing the original service level, including continuing to promote Sarawak as a preferred tourist and business destination, attracting more visitors to Sarawak and Sabah.
He said this cooperation will not only enhance their cooperative relationship but also further boost the development of our country's aviation sector.
Meanwhile, according to the Malaysian Aviation Group, the transfer is expected to be completed by the end of this year, and the group will work closely with all stakeholders, including shareholder Khazanah Nasional Berhad, to ensure a seamless transition and compliance with all relevant legal and regulatory frameworks.
During the entire transition period, MASwings will continue to operate as usual under the supervision of the Malaysian Aviation Group, ensuring uninterrupted community air services for those who depend on them.
Other witnesses to this historic signing ceremony included our Minister of Transport Loke Siew Fook, Sarawak Deputy Premier Douglas, Sim Kui Hian, Sarawak Speaker Asfia, Sarawak Minister of Transport Lee Kim Shin, and members of the Malaysian Aviation Group Board, among others.
