American pop diva Katy Perry purchased a mansion in Santa Barbara in 2020 for $15 million (about 58.91 million MYR) from Carl Westcott, an 86-year-old veteran businessman suffering from the hereditary neurodegenerative Huntington's disease. A few days after the sale, Carl requested to cancel the contract, claiming he was not of sound mind at the time of signing due to the influence of pain medication. Katy refused to agree, and through her financial manager, took Carl to court. Last year, the court ruled in favor of Katy, awarding her $1.94 million (about 7.62 million MYR) in compensation as well as ownership of the mansion. However, Katy was also criticized for suing a seriously ill elderly man.
Katy was undeterred by this criticism and pressed on, recently filing for $5 million (about 19.64 million MYR) in legal fees incurred over the course of five years from Carl, sparking further controversy.
