Wong Jing Reveals Shocking Secrets about Shaw Brothers Dormitory: Over 10 Industry Insiders Committed Suicide

Director Wong Jing runs the YouTube channel "Wong Jing Laughs at the Jianghu," where he frequently exposes entertainment industry insider stories. He once revealed frightening secrets about the Shaw Brothers studio dormitory from the 1960s and 70s. Wong Jing stated that more than 10 industry insiders committed suicide in the Shaw Brothers dormitory.

The Shaw Brothers dormitory was built at the Clearwater Bay studio to provide accommodation for film crews and contract artists coming from out of town. However, this place ended up hiding many tragedies and even became the source of local urban legends. Among the many tragedies, Wong Jing specifically mentioned the suicides of director Chin Chien—ex-husband of Lam Chui—and actress Li Ting.

Wong Jing said that, back then, Chin Chien was addicted to gambling and, combined with his career setbacks, was unable to cope; another person who ended her life at the Shaw Brothers dormitory, Li Ting, was just 21 years old when she died. According to rumors at the time, Li Ting married a wealthy businessman to raise medical expenses for her father, and even gave the money to Chin Chien. Unexpectedly, Chin Chien lost all the money gambling, subjecting Li Ting to both emotional distress and financial pressure.

After Li Ting took her own life, ghost stories about the Shaw Brothers dormitory spread continuously. Coincidentally, three years after Li Ting's death, Chin Chien, weighed down by gambling debts, ended his life in the same place and in the same manner. Many people believed that this was Li Ting coming back to claim his life. The incident was later adapted into the movie "The Unwritten Law," which Jade Girl Joey Wong also starred in. The film was released in 1989.
