Starting from July 2026, the Australian government will mandate electricity companies to provide at least 3 hours of free solar electricity each day to households in New South Wales, South Australia, and Southeast Queensland that have installed smart meters. This aims to utilize the surplus solar power generated around midday, while reducing residents' electricity bills and improving grid stability.
The initiative, called the Solar Sharing Program, will benefit residents in the above-mentioned three states regardless of whether they own or rent their homes or have installed solar panels. The free electricity period is expected to be between 11:00am and 2:00pm daily. The Australian Department of Energy encourages people to use energy-intensive appliances such as air conditioners, washing machines, or dishwashers during this time.
The department hopes to roll out similar measures nationwide by 2027 to lower peak electricity demand at night and reduce costly grid upgrades and maintenance costs. However, some are concerned that unless the government subsidizes consumers or electricity suppliers, this initiative could lead to higher electricity prices during other periods.
