Stephen Chow’s directed film “Kung Fu Soccer Girls” has achieved an impressive 2.08 billion RMB (about 1.26 billion MYR) box office in China, making waves in the industry. However, 74-year-old former boss Danny Lee, a double Best Actor winner at the Golden Horse and Hong Kong Film Awards, recently lashed out at him during a livestream and interview. Danny Lee sarcastically remarked that Stephen Chow 'has no friends, no children, and no family,' saying that earning more money is pointless, and even mocked him for wearing hats and sneaking around in public, 'afraid of getting beaten or kidnapped,' clearly indicating that the feud between the two remains deep.
Their grudge traces back to a remuneration dispute many years ago. In 1986, Danny Lee established a film company and gave newcomer Stephen Chow a chance in “Final Justice,” which helped Chow win the Golden Horse Award for Best Supporting Actor and sealed a contract for ten films. Later, as Stephen Chow shot to fame through the hit film “All for the Winner,” his market rate increased dramatically, but when he returned to shoot movies for Danny Lee’s company, he was still paid the low salary from the old contract, which led to a complete fallout between them.
Afterwards, Danny Lee sold Stephen Chow’s remaining contract films to Charles Heung’s Win's Movie Production, which resulted in classics like “God of Gamblers II” and “Fight Back to School.” Speaking about the dispute, Danny Lee emphasized he had helped Chow get 20 film roles and never took a cent as commission, claiming he had treated him generously and had a clear conscience, while criticizing Stephen Chow as being ruthless. The two have not reconciled to this day.
