Nigerian Air Force Reportedly Mistakenly Bombs Market, Over 100 Dead

On the 11th, while the Nigerian Air Force was carrying out airstrikes against domestic insurgents, they reportedly accidentally bombed a market near Borno State in Yobe State in the northeast, resulting in the deaths of more than 100 people, including children. Authorities have confirmed this was a mistaken attack.

According to the Associated Press, Nigeria's Islamic extremist groups mainly operate in Borno State, causing unrest in the region for over a decade. Unexpectedly, during the military's recent airstrike, a market in Yobe State was accidentally bombed, leading to serious casualties.

The head of Amnesty International’s Nigeria office revealed they have obtained photos of the casualties, including children. An anonymous employee at Yobe State Geidam General Hospital indicated at least 23 wounded people are receiving treatment.

These types of mistaken attacks by the Nigerian military occur frequently, and since 2017 they have resulted in at least 500 civilian deaths. Security analysts say intelligence failures and a lack of coordination between ground forces and the air force are the main reasons for repeated accidental strikes.
