(Bandar Seri Begawan, 18th) — On the first day of the Chinese Lunar New Year, a fatal traffic accident occurred near Tungku Beach along the Muara-Tutong Highway in Brunei, where a car collided with two bicycles, resulting in the immediate deaths of both cyclists.

The incident took place yesterday (17th) in the morning. The Royal Brunei Police Force received an emergency call at around 7am via the 993 hotline, reporting a serious traffic accident in the Muara area near Tungku Beach.

Preliminary investigations showed that a car had struck two cyclists who were riding at the time. Medical personnel arrived at the scene and confirmed that both victims had died on the spot.

Police revealed that the driver involved was a local male, and upon investigation, it was found he did not possess a valid driving license. Additionally, the vehicle’s insurance and road tax had expired since January 2026. The driver claimed that his vision was affected by glaring sunlight before the accident and only realized he had hit the cyclists after hearing a loud noise from the front of the car.

It is understood that both deceased were wearing professional cycling attire at the time and had on safety gear including helmets.

The involved car and the two bicycles have been taken to Sengkurong Police Station for further inspection. Police are continuing with an in-depth investigation to determine the cause of the accident.

The police urge all road users to remain vigilant and prioritize safety, especially during conditions with glare, heavy rain, or reduced visibility, advising that drivers slow down and maintain safe distances. Cyclists are also reminded to always wear appropriate protective gear and ensure their licenses, road tax, and insurance are valid to avoid violating the law.
