(Bandar Seri Begawan, 9th) A six-person delegation from the Market Supervision Bureau of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, China, recently arrived in Brunei for a two-day visit.

The delegation was welcomed at the Ministry building by Allen On, Director of Brunei’s Industrial and Business Ecosystem Department (IBE) and Co-Secretary General of the Brunei-Guangxi Economic Corridor, together with officials from the Ministry of Finance and Economy.

In his welcome speech, Allen On stated that Brunei is firmly committed to establishing a long-term cooperative relationship with Guangxi, emphasizing the importance of cooperation in technical fields such as standardization, metrology, conformity assessment, and regulatory formulation. These areas are key drivers for promoting trade, innovation, and quality infrastructure. He pointed out that these efforts will directly support the strategic objectives of the Brunei-Guangxi Economic Corridor.

During the discussions, both parties agreed to strengthen cooperation in a number of areas, including: sharing technical standards and regulatory information; hosting joint seminars and technical exchanges; implementing training and capacity building projects; carrying out calibration, testing, and certification cooperation at the laboratory level; and promoting pilot projects in halal, food safety, and digital trade sectors.

One of the focal points of the discussion was Brunei’s plan to establish a National Metrology Institute (NMI) to strengthen the national metrology system and complement the National Quality Infrastructure (NQI). The technical expertise and experience of the Guangxi Market Supervision Bureau are seen as important resources for assisting Brunei in developing training modules, advancing the metrology system, and establishing the research institute.

During the visit, the delegation also met with the Brunei Darussalam Standards and Accreditation Centre (BDSAC) and visited the Standards and Metrology Unit (MSU) under the Ministry of Finance and Economy to gain in-depth insight into Brunei’s practices and implementation in standardization, accreditation, and metrology, as well as to explore the potential for future institutional cooperation.

This visit not only further consolidates the shared commitment of both sides to advancing the Brunei-Guangxi Economic Corridor but also promotes the construction of the national quality system through pragmatic technical cooperation, facilitating greater economic integration between the two countries across broader fields.
