(Kuching, 21st) The Sarawak Road Transport Department will adopt the method of posing as express bus passengers to monitor drivers and ensure they comply with road regulations.
Deputy Minister of Transport Malaysia, Datuk Hasbi Habibollah, stated that this initiative aims to ensure passengers' safety by monitoring drivers' behavior during their journeys.
"We will place spies or 'eyes and ears' on the buses to monitor the drivers. This is to ensure they do not use mobile phones while driving, change drivers at the prescribed distances, do not exceed the time limit, and do not speed."
He said this yesterday while attending the 2024 Christmas Road Safety Awareness Program at the Kuching Central Bus Terminal and during an interview with reporters.
Meanwhile, Hasbi emphasized that stern action will be taken in case of any violations.
"If the inspectors find any violations, the bus will be stopped immediately and appropriate action will be taken. The company is also responsible for ensuring the journey can continue by replacing the driver if necessary."
According to him, this operation will not only be conducted during Christmas but also during other festive periods such as Chinese New Year and Hari Raya.
He hopes that this measure can be implemented throughout the year.
