(Miri, 23rd) Sarawak Minister of Transport Dato' Sri Lee Kim Shin attended the beach cleaning campaign organized by the Miri Disaster Management Committee at the beach of Marina Park today.
In his speech, Lee Kim Shin mentioned that the garbage problem on Miri beach has not been completely resolved, and therefore, the Miri City Council should consider implementing long-term management actions until the problem is truly solved.
"We need to ensure where exactly the garbage scattered on the beach is coming from and identify the root cause so that we can address the issue effectively."
He stated that if the garbage is being washed up from the river to the beach, then we must address the source and prevent residents from indiscriminately discarding garbage.
"The city council should strengthen the supervision of garbage management, especially for residents living near riverbanks. They should not be allowed to throw garbage into the river casually, and the city council should provide adequate trash bins to facilitate proper disposal."
Lee Kim Shin also suggested that the relevant authorities conduct long-term beach cleaning actions, ensure that the type of garbage and the extent of coastal pollution are monitored, and deploy heavy machinery like excavators in due course to clear accumulated garbage.
"Apart from the garbage issue, blocked drainage systems are also one of the reasons for flooding. Therefore, relevant agencies must work together to clean drains and rivers, ensuring smooth drainage systems and preventing floods."
In attendance was Sarawak Deputy Minister of Tourism Dato' Sebastian Ting.
It is reported that the event was attended by over 470 people.
