(Miri, 27th) – Sarawak Minister of Transport and Senadin State Assemblyman Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin stated that under the push of Sarawak’s Post-COVID-19 Development Strategy 2030 (PCDS 2030), the government is steadily moving towards a high-income and sustainable economy, creating more opportunities for development for businesses and the people.
He pointed this out in his speech last night while attending the “63rd Sarawak Day, DUBS Miri Branch 40th Anniversary and 2026 Dayak Festival Appreciation Dinner” organized by the Dayak Chamber of Commerce and Industry Sarawak (DUBS) Miri Branch at the Southlake Club Restaurant.
Lee Kim Shin also noted that Sarawak is marching towards artificial intelligence (AI), a high-income society, and sustainable development. The key to the current progress in the state lies in the people’s longstanding unity and political stability.
He said that this year’s Sarawak Day celebration, for which he served as committee chairman, incorporated elements of artificial intelligence into the opening ceremony, demonstrating Sarawak’s determination to embrace technological innovation and move into the AI era.
He congratulated DUBS on its 40th anniversary and commended the association’s decades-long dedication to supporting Bumiputera entrepreneurs, promoting SME development, creating business opportunities, and partnering with the government to spur Sarawak’s economic growth, with contributions truly worthy of recognition.
Lee Kim Shin stated that Sarawak Day not only serves as a reminder for people to remember history, but also as a responsibility to transform its abundant resources and potential into opportunities for future development. Under the leadership of Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari, the government has actively implemented various policies, including infrastructure development, digital transformation, renewable energy, hydrogen economy, food security, and educational reform, gradually achieving results and continuously attracting both local and foreign investors.
He pointed out that the high cost of airfares has long been a concern for Sarawakians, particularly affecting holiday homecomings, travel of students between Peninsular Malaysia and Sarawak, and business activities. Therefore, the Sarawak government established AirBorneo to enhance connectivity, increase options, and stabilize airfares between Sarawak and Peninsular Malaysia.
“Transportation is not just about the movement of people; it is also a vital bridge connecting opportunities, business, investment, and linking Sarawak to the global economy.”
In addition, he mentioned that the Marudi region has recently discovered an estimated 800 million barrels of extractable oil resources, indicating Sarawak still possesses enormous economic potential, but the key lies in effective resource utilization and increasing local participation.
He said that through PETROS and improved policies, the Sarawak government will ensure that more resource value remains local, creating extensive business opportunities in sectors including engineering, logistics, construction, information technology, professional services, and training.
He emphasized that as Miri is the birthplace of Sarawak’s oil industry, ongoing onshore oil and gas exploration will inject new vitality into the local economy, bringing more investment and business opportunities.
“For entrepreneurs, this is not only good news but also a development opportunity. Successful businesses of the future won’t just sell products; they will also provide services, technology, and innovation, advancing into regional and even international markets.”
Lee Kim Shin also encouraged Sarawak entrepreneurs to bravely expand into international markets, develop export businesses, and continually enhance their competitiveness, bringing local products overseas and raising the profile of Sarawak brands.
He noted that economic development must be built on confidence, which derives from political stability. Sarawak has a unified and forward-looking government, giving investors, businesses, and international partners confidence in Sarawak, which in turn drives investment, creates jobs, and improves the standard of living.
“Investors value policy stability, consistent governance, and responsible government—these are also key reasons Sarawak is able to attract substantial investments.”
He stressed that Sarawak’s long-term harmony among its many ethnic groups, religions, and cultures is an important foundation for continuous development, and the people must cherish the hard-won peace and stability.
Additionally, he affirmed DUBS’s important role in business development and called on the association to continue nurturing young entrepreneurs, strengthening SME development, and building even closer partnerships with government agencies, financial institutions, and industry.
He said, in the future, the economy will belong to businesses that dare to innovate, make the most of digitalization, AI, automation, green technology, and actively expand into international markets.
