California Governor Newsom stated on social media on the 9th that U.S. President Trump actually threatened to arrest him, which is a "line that cannot be crossed" in America.
Newsom shared a video clip of Trump being interviewed earlier that day, and then wrote: "The President of the United States just openly talked about arresting a sitting governor. I truly hope America never sees such a day. Whether you're a Democrat or a Republican, this is a line that our nation cannot cross."
The Trump administration's Chief of Border Affairs, Homan, stated on the 8th that there will be continued crackdowns on illegal immigrants in Southern California, and that "any obstructionists" will be arrested, including Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Bass.
In response to this in an interview, Newsom said, "Come arrest me then, am I afraid of him? This won't stop me from speaking for California." To this, Trump said to the media on the morning of the 9th, "If I were Homan, I would go arrest him, I think that would be great."
Since the ongoing clashes between Los Angeles community residents and federal agency law enforcement personnel began on the 6th, Trump and Newsom have been engaged in a "war of words," with the former criticizing the latter as "incompetent" and unable to control the chaotic situation, and the latter accusing the former of creating "a crisis" and "adding fuel to the fire" to gain political advantage.
