Three International Agencies Establish Coordination Group to Address Economic Impact of Middle East War

The heads of the International Energy Agency, International Monetary Fund, and World Bank issued a joint statement on the 1st, agreeing to establish a coordination group to maximize the effectiveness of each agency in responding to the impact of the Middle East conflict on energy and the economy.

The statement pointed out that the current war in the Middle East has caused significant disruption to the lives and livelihoods of local populations and triggered severe supply shortages in global energy markets. Energy importers, especially low-income countries, are bearing a greater impact. The three institutions joining forces to address this crisis is crucial.

The statement said that the coordination group will assess the extent of impact on different countries and regions by coordinating and sharing data on energy market and prices, trade flows, fiscal and balance of payments pressures, inflation trends, key commodity export restrictions, and supply chain disruptions.

At the same time, the group will comprehensively coordinate response mechanisms, including: providing targeted policy recommendations; assessing potential financing needs and offering corresponding financial support; and exercising risk mitigation tools as appropriate. The group will also mobilize other multilateral, regional, and bilateral partners and stakeholders to provide coordinated support to countries in need.

Previously, the International Energy Agency coordinated 32 member states to unanimously agree to release 400 million barrels of strategic oil reserves and has been in talks on a further potential oil reserve release.
