(Bintulu, 26th) A large fire broke out in Sangan Town, Tatau Island, Bintulu, Sarawak on Thursday (25th) night, destroying about 30 illegal wooden houses and leaving one person burned to death, with the body charred beyond recognition.
The spokesperson for the Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department's Operations Command Center issued a statement saying that the identity of the deceased has not yet been confirmed.
He said that the department received a fire report at 11:18pm on Thursday night, after which seven firefighters from Tatau Island Fire and Rescue Department were dispatched to the scene.
"Upon arrival, it was found that the fire involved about 30 illegal wooden houses near Sangan Iban National School (SK Sangan Iban), and almost all the houses were completely destroyed by the fire."
"As the fire was on the opposite side of the river with no direct road access, the team was forced to use boats to transport firefighting equipment across the river."
"The charred remains were found at 2:36am, and efforts are still ongoing to confirm the victim's identity."
"The operation team is also still gathering information to determine the actual number of people affected by the disaster."
