Attempting to escape by jumping out the window and 'climbing walls,' but ending up with broken ribs! An African man suspected of involvement in an online romance scam panicked and jumped from a third-floor window during a police raid, only to injure himself instead of getting away.
At around 1:50 p.m. on Thursday (28th), police conducted a raid in a residential area in Nilai, Negeri Sembilan, arresting five African male and female suspects on the spot.
Preliminary investigations revealed the group had been active for about two years and had defrauded victims of over one million ringgit.
Nilai District Police Chief Superintendent Mali said the five arrested suspects included three men and two women (aged between their thirties and forties). Police also seized several items suspected to be tools for scams during the operation.
"One of the men tried to escape from a third-floor window but accidentally fell, fracturing his ribs on the spot."
Citing the preliminary police investigation, Mali stated that this group had been active since August 2023, targeting both domestic and international individuals. They set up multiple fake accounts on Facebook to look for victims, and have defrauded about one million ringgit so far.
He added that police seized a total of four laptop computers, 15 mobile phones, two tablets, 11 different bank or financial transfer cards, two data modems, two USB drives, and one hard drive during the operation.
The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code (fraud) and Section 120B (criminal conspiracy). The five suspects have had their detention extended until next Monday (September 1) to assist with investigations.
The police urge the public that, if they have any information on online scam activities or criminal cases, to call the Nilai District Police Headquarters (067904222) or go to the nearest police station to provide information.
