(Putrajaya, 31st) The government today held the 2026 National Heroes Day memorial ceremony at the National Heroes Square, once again remembering and honoring the seven heroes who perished in the Ulu Legong incident over 40 years ago.
This year’s ceremony, hosted by the Malaysian Army, was themed "Remembering Merits, Strengthening National Defense." Its aim was to pay tribute to the security forces who sacrificed themselves for the nation since the Emergency and the Indonesia–Malaysia confrontation, and to remind all that without priceless sacrifices, there would be no peace.
Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Anwar, accompanied by his wife Dato’ Seri Dr. Wan Azizah, attended the ceremony.
Other attendees included Minister of Home Affairs, Dato' Seri Saifuddin Nasution, Minister of Defense Dato’ Seri Khaled Nordin, Chief of the Armed Forces General Tan Sri Mohd Razar, as well as Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Mohamad Khalid.
The ceremony commenced with the sounding of the “Last Post” and the lowering of the Jalur Gemilang (national flag) to pay respects to the fallen national heroes.
The highlight of the event was a mime drama entitled “Ulu Legong: Blood-soaked Heroes” (Darah Pahlawan Ulu Legong), re-enacting the battle that took place in Ulu Legong, Kuala Ketil, Kedah on 29 October 1981, telling the story of seven security force members who perished heroically while fighting communist terrorists.
The mime, told through a moving narrative from the perspective of the families, depicted the painful wait for their loved ones' return, only to finally receive their cold remains, painting the sorrow endured by parents whose children made the ultimate sacrifice for their country.
This was followed by the recitation of the poem “Seven Heroes, One Homeland” (Tujuh Perwira, Sebuah Tanah Air), to commemorate the seven national heroes who perished in this event, namely Corporal Hashim Sulaiman, Private Rosli Mail, Private Kamil Mahmood, Private Kamil Abdul Hamid, Private Mohamad Mendeka, Private Mazlin, and Private Mohamad Kambari. The poem also mentioned the two survivors, namely Private Mohamad Syed Adam and Private Mohamad Shafi.
This poem, jointly created by Major Mohamad Nanli and Sergeant Siti Nuraini, praised their sacrifice as a symbol of courage and fighting spirit, passed down through today's generation.
A verse from the poem reads: “Ulu Legong shed blood yesterday, nurturing today’s independence; Ulu Legong shed blood yesterday, irrigating the peace we inherit today.”
The ceremony concluded with the sounding of the “Reveille,” as the Jalur Gemilang was raised again, symbolizing the heritage of fighting spirit and the resolve to defend national sovereignty.
During this solemn ceremony of historical significance, the Prime Minister also took time to thank Mohamad Syed Adam, Commander Lieutenant Colonel Hansah Othman of the 22nd Battalion Royal Malay Regiment (22 RAMD), and close relatives of those who perished in the Ulu Legong incident and attended the ceremony.
