A 30-year-old man recently traveled to Harbin, Heilongjiang Province, China, where he strolled outdoors wearing only a pair of regular pants in -20°C temperatures. Reportedly, due to inadequate protection against the cold and a pre-existing condition of varicose veins, a blood vessel in his lower leg ruptured while he was on the street. A large amount of blood soaked through his trousers and spurted onto the ground, shocking passersby.
According to media reports, the incident happened on the evening of the 8th, when police were patrolling Central Street in Harbin and a woman approached them for help, saying her boyfriend was bleeding heavily from his leg. When two officers arrived at the scene, they found a man with a pale face sitting limply on a bench, clutching his lower leg tightly. Blood had not only soaked his pants but was dripping onto the ground and turning into "blood ice." The man said that this was not the first time he had bled like this.
Before the ambulance arrived, the police first carried the man to a nearby hotel to keep him warm and used a first aid kit to provide immediate care. The moment they cut open the man's trouser leg, blood gushed out. The officers quickly used gauze to apply pressure and a tourniquet to control the bleeding. While helping to stem the bleeding, the police also reminded the man, "When you're out in the Northeast, you need to wear thermal pants."
The man was later taken to the hospital, and after surgery he was no longer in danger. Doctors said that thanks to timely blood loss prevention, his life was not at risk; if they had waited another half hour, excessive blood loss could have been fatal. The doctors further reminded that cold weather causes blood vessels to constrict, and people with varicose veins are more prone to blood clots.
