(Miri, 22nd) Two postgraduate researchers from Curtin University Malaysia (Curtin Malaysia) have recently completed advanced environmental research internships in Japan after receiving funding from the renowned Center for Marine Environmental Studies (CMES) at Ehime University, marking another achievement in international environmental research collaboration.

PhD candidate Audrey Primus and Master of Philosophy (MPhil) research student Upeksha Gayangani Jayasekara Polwaththe Gedara spent several months in Japan, conducting laboratory research under the guidance of internationally recognized experts in environmental chemistry. This research opportunity stemmed from the long-standing and strong collaboration between Curtin Malaysia and Ehime University.

Audrey's research focused on microplastic pollution in the Rajang River, Sibu, Sarawak. Under the guidance of Associate Professor Tomoya Kataoka, she used advanced analytical techniques to deeply investigate river samples and combined global datasets to construct a more comprehensive pollution map.

Upeksha specialized in the study of the biodegradation of pharmaceutical compounds. With the guidance of Associate Professor Rumi Tanoue, she explored the use of specific microorganisms to break down persistent pollutants, transforming them into substances of lesser harm, bringing new ideas for future sustainable water treatment technologies.

Both researchers are co-supervised at Curtin Malaysia by Professor Tony Hadibarata and Dr. Muhammad Noor Hazwan. Professor Hadibarata stated that the students' opportunity to intern at one of Asia's leading environmental science centers fully demonstrates the international recognition of Curtin Malaysia’s research.

"Our students' research experience at CMES not only elevated their professional standards but also enabled them to propose practical solutions to global environmental challenges."

He added that Curtin University is committed to cultivating a new generation of researchers capable of tackling complex global issues. Whether it is microplastic pollution or pharmaceutical waste management, the Japan research experiences of Audrey and Upeksha will further enhance the international influence of their research achievements.

This placement in Japan not only highlights Curtin Malaysia’s increasingly important role in international research collaboration, but also demonstrates the university’s dedication to training environmental science researchers with a global vision and practical skills.
