Nuclear Energy as a Future Option - Premier: Sarawak's Abundant Hydrogen Resources

Published at Feb 01, 2025 01:24 pm
(Miri, 1st) Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari stated that Sarawak views nuclear energy as an option in the future energy landscape, although the state's abundant hydrogen resources open up space for more sustainable and renewable alternative energies.

He said that although modular nuclear reactors could potentially become a major energy source, their practicality for Sarawak is limited due to the restriction of uranium resources.

The Premier made this remark while speaking at the SUPP Miri Parliamentary Constituency Committee's Chinese New Year dinner.

He pointed out that nuclear energy requires uranium, a resource that is not easily accessible, but Sarawak has the advantage of having abundant hydrogen resources not only from methane but also from water.

"Hydrogen can be mixed with carbon to produce synthetic energy, which has the potential to replace nuclear energy, making Sarawak a leader in green energy."

He indicated that Sarawak is currently collaborating with Japan to produce ammonia, which is expected to become the main fuel for the marine industry.

"Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba invited me to meet and discuss efforts to produce ammonia as a 'marine industry fuel.'"

The Premier also expressed gratitude to the federal government for trusting the state to manage the natural gas industry, which will bring more opportunities to the energy and petrochemical sectors in Sarawak.

He mentioned that by 2027, Miri will successfully use a Combined Cycle Gas Turbine (CCGT) to produce 500 megawatts of power.

"Although the Lunar New Year was spent in the rain, some say water brings wealth, so I hope Sarawak can prosper even more this year."

He also expressed regret over the landslide incident in Miri this year that resulted in casualties, and stated that the Sarawak government will strive to provide all possible assistance, allocating 10 million Ringgit to the state's disaster management center for aid, while also thanking non-governmental organizations for their assistance.
