After half a year, the second batch of 42 M1A2T tanks purchased by Taiwan from the United States has arrived in Taiwan.
According to reports from Taiwan’s United Daily News and ETtoday News Cloud, the second batch of 42 M1A2T tanks ordered by the Taiwanese Army from the U.S. arrived at Taipei Port on Sunday evening (July 27) aboard the Guoan vessel. Around 12:10 a.m. on Monday (the 28th), they were transported out of the port area by civilian large flatbed trucks and moved to the Armored Troops Training Command in Hukou, Hsinchu. The entire process was overseen by police and military police, who assisted with traffic control.
As of now, Taiwan has a total of 80 M1A2T tanks. The first batch of 38 M1A2T tanks arrived at Taipei Port on December 15 last year. On July 10 this year, during the second day of the Han Kuang exercise, the M1A2T tanks conducted 120-kilometer live-fire tank gun exercises at the Kengzikou training ground in Hsinchu, an event personally inspected by President Lai Ching-te, accompanied by Defense Minister Wellington Koo and National Security Council Secretary-General Joseph Wu.
The second batch of M1A2T tanks was originally scheduled to arrive on Saturday night (the 26th), but was delayed by a day due to typhoon impact, and was finally unloaded and safely transferred on Sunday. The tanks will subsequently undergo preparation and testing. Equipped with the latest digital fire control systems and enhanced protection, this batch of M1A2T tanks is dubbed the most powerful armored vehicle on earth, and will become one of the main forces in the Taiwanese Army after being commissioned.
The Taiwanese Army currently has about a thousand tanks in service, mainly CM-11 Brave Tiger and M60A3 tanks, most of which have been in service for over 20 years. To enhance combat capability, the Army has, since 2019, allocated a total budget of 40,524,150,000 NT dollars (about 1,760,570,000 Singapore dollars) to purchase 108 M1A2T tanks from the U.S. over several years, to be deployed with the Sixth Corps responsible for defending northern Taiwan. After these two batches, the U.S. is expected to deliver the final batch of 28 tanks to Taiwan in the first quarter of next year.
