An unusual incident occurred in Zhengzhou, Henan, China, in the early morning of the 8th, when a 20-year-old man jumped from the third floor while sleepwalking, resulting in multiple fractures.
The individual, surnamed Cao, later posted a video online, jokingly thanking the heavens, saying, “At least I'm not paralyzed or disabled,” and attached his hospital discharge report. The report showed his injuries included multiple fractures, a subtrochanteric femoral fracture, pelvic fracture, head injury, brow arch laceration, and elbow sprain.
According to Jiupai News, Cao recalled that he had worked for 14 hours that day and quickly fell into a deep sleep upon arriving home. In his dream, he felt as if someone was chasing him. He awoke with a start to find himself already mid-air, and the next second, he crashed heavily to the ground. His cousin, who shared the residence, said he saw Cao get out of bed barefoot, walk to the window, open it, and immediately leap out — all seemingly without any awareness.
Cao revealed that he has been sleepwalking since childhood, though not frequently. He believes that this episode was likely triggered by extreme fatigue and a deep level of sleep, during which he managed to open a previously closed window while sleepwalking.
After the incident, Cao was rushed to the hospital and has recently been discharged after treatment. He is now recuperating at home. He admitted that this sleepwalking fall scared him and made his family realize the need to strengthen safety measures in his sleeping environment. Cao also joked that if there are no window bars, he might as well tie a rope to himself in the future to prevent another accident.
Medical records show that while his injuries were numerous, he was fortunate not to suffer paralysis or permanent disability. The hospital cautioned that long hours of intense work can affect sleep quality and pose heightened risks for people with a history of sleepwalking. They advised avoiding easily opened high-rise windows or other dangerous fixtures at home to prevent similar incidents from happening again. (News source: CTWANT)
