A 57-year-old Indonesian man was investigated and seized by the Malaysian Border Control and Protection Agency (AKPS) after arriving at Penang from Guangzhou, China, carrying 45 suspected wild animal horn products.
It is understood that these wild animal horn products are worth about RM5,000. Authorities have confiscated the items and handed them to the Malaysian Department of Wildlife and National Parks for further investigation.
In a statement released on Saturday (22nd), the Malaysian Border Control and Protection Agency confirmed the case, saying the agency uncovered this suspected smuggling of wild animal products on the 20th of this month at Penang International Airport.
The Indonesian passenger involved arrived in Penang on a China Southern Airlines flight from Guangzhou. When entering the airport, enforcement officers discovered the batch of wild animal horn products during luggage inspection.
Upon investigation, it was found that these animal products did not have the valid permits or legal documents as required by Section 68(1)(b) of the 2010 Wildlife Conservation Act, and were therefore handled by the authorities for being illegal.
The agency also emphasized that authorities will continue to strengthen cooperation with other law enforcement agencies to strictly combat various forms of transnational crime, especially those involving wildlife smuggling and illegal trade, in order to ensure the safety of the country’s international entry points and effective law enforcement.
