A temporary wooden scaffold erected outside a church in Ethiopia collapsed on the 1st, resulting in at least 36 deaths and over 200 injuries.
The incident occurred at a church near Areti town, Amhara region, approximately 70 kilometers east of the capital Addis Ababa. The accident happened at around 7:45 a.m. local time, when local residents were attending a religious event.
Regional police chief Gebeyehu told the media: "The death toll has reached 36, and may continue to rise."
He stated that more than 200 people were injured and are receiving treatment at a local hospital.
Police said that many people are still trapped under the collapsed scaffolding. At present, rescue efforts are ongoing, and the number of casualties may further increase.
