An elderly man in Jieyang, Guangdong, China, unearthed a Chinese yam that closely resembles a human palm, astonishing local residents. Someone offered 8,000 RMB (4,554 ringgit) to purchase it, but the owner refused.

According to Xiaoxiang Morning News, an elderly man in Jieyang, Guangdong recently dug up a yam in his own vegetable garden that looked uncannily like a human arm with a palm, which initially startled him into thinking he had uncovered a corpse.

The story quickly became a hot topic locally, attracting crowds of residents to come and see the palm-shaped yam. The owner of the yam revealed that someone had offered 8,000 RMB to buy it, but he turned down the offer and has yet to decide what to do with this rare palm-shaped yam.

The report states that it is actually quite common for yams (Dioscorea opposita) to come in various shapes. As the tuber grows underground, it can be affected by the hardness of the soil, rocks, roots, and other external factors, which can alter its growth direction and shape. Occasionally, uniquely shaped yams resembling animals or human body parts will appear. The taste and nutritional value, however, are the same as ordinary yams.
