Hong Kong Security Bureau Urges Hong Kong Residents in Japan to Heighten Vigilance

Sino-Japanese relations remain tense due to the Taiwan issue. Following the notice issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of mainland China on Friday (November 14), "advising Chinese citizens to avoid traveling to Japan in the near future," the Hong Kong Security Bureau has also responded to the MFA's warning by urging Hong Kong residents planning to travel to or already in Japan to remain vigilant.

In response to an inquiry from Radio Television Hong Kong, the Security Bureau of the Hong Kong SAR Government stated that it regularly evaluates the list of countries covered by the Outbound Travel Alert System and will adjust relevant alert levels as needed. The yellow outbound travel alert for the area near Japan's Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant remains valid, while there are currently no travel alerts for other regions of Japan.

However, in light of the recent reminder from the mainland MFA regarding Chinese citizens traveling to Japan, the Hong Kong Security Bureau has updated the supplementary information about Japan on its Outbound Travel Alert System website, reminding Hong Kong residents planning to visit or already in Japan to heighten their vigilance, pay attention to safety, keep updated on local announcements about the latest situation, and follow consular service information issued by Chinese embassies and consulates in Japan.

The Hong Kong Security Bureau stated it will continue to monitor the situation in Japan closely and will issue the latest updates if there is further news.

Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi's recent remarks on the "Taiwan contingency" and Chinese Consul-General in Osaka Xue Jian's countering "decapitation theory" have sparked multiple confrontations between China and Japan over the past week.
The Chinese MFA issued a notice on Friday, stating that Japanese leaders had "openly made flagrant and provocative comments regarding Taiwan, seriously damaging the atmosphere for Sino-Japanese personnel exchanges, and posing major risks to the safety and lives of Chinese citizens in Japan." As such, it warned Chinese citizens to avoid traveling to Japan in the near future.

Subsequently, the three major Chinese airlines—China Southern Airlines, Air China, and China Eastern Airlines—announced on Saturday (15th) that tickets for Japan routes can be refunded or changed for free.
