(Jakarta, 9th) Indonesian police have identified a 17-year-old male student as the suspect in the Jakarta North District high school mosque explosion, and several items matching evidence found at the scene were seized from the young man’s home.
According to Kompas, Jakarta Special Region Police spokesperson Budi said at a press conference on Saturday (November 8): “We have reason to suspect this student, and therefore searched his home to confirm whether evidence found by police at the explosion scene matched. We will send this evidence to the police forensics laboratory for testing, then submit a complete report.”
Media reports stated that investigators had already found powdered explosives at the scene, as well as a toy gun marked with the names of extremists who carried out terrorist attacks in other countries. However, it was not stated what evidence was seized at the suspect’s home.
According to news website Detik, Budi revealed at the press conference that the suspect was seriously injured in the explosion but is currently conscious after surgery.
The police are currently investigating the suspect’s motive and his social network.
Indonesian Police Chief Listyo said at another press conference on Saturday that, although a student suspect had been identified, the possibility of others being involved has not been ruled out.
According to some students and police’s preliminary investigation, the suspect was frequently bullied at school and may have acted out of revenge, though the exact reason remains subject to further investigation.
Listyo also updated the number of people injured by the explosion, raising it from the previously announced 54 to 96, of whom 29 are still hospitalized and at least two are in intensive care.
This explosion occurred at noon on Friday (7th) in the mosque of National Senior High School 72 (SMA Negeri 72) in Kelapa Gading, North Jakarta, during which many teachers and students were praying.
Student Ginza told AFP that the scene was chaotic. “At first, we thought it was an electronic device that exploded, maybe a sound system... but later we found out the explosion site was under the prayer mat.”
