(Kuala Lumpur, 5th) Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry Tengku Zafrul has refuted rumors and clarified that joining the People's Justice Party (PKR) was not for the purpose of contesting in the next general election.
In August, Tengku Zafrul joined PKR, becoming a member of the party's Ampang division.
In an interview with Utusan Malaysia, he stated that he has not reached any agreement with the party president, Dato' Seri Anwar, including contesting in the general election.
He admitted that his joining the PKR Ampang division received support from the division, but emphasized that this does not mean he will necessarily be a candidate in the general election.
Zafrul also said that before deciding to join PKR, he met with many leaders such as state assemblymen and branch leaders to seek their opinions and support.
On May 30th, Zafrul announced his resignation as UMNO Supreme Council member, Kota Raja division chief, and as a UMNO member. Zafrul's second term as Senator will also expire at the end of this year, after which he will have to step down as minister.
