Peruvian President Boluarte said that the election of Leo XIV as the new Pope of the Catholic Church is "of historical significance for Peru."
On the 8th, Boluarte wrote on social media that Leo XIV "became a Peruvian citizen out of volition and conviction," serving Peru for more than twenty years.
Originally named Robert Francis Prevost, Leo XIV was born on September 14, 1955, in Chicago, USA. After ordination, he served in Peru for many years and took on administrative duties within his religious order. He became a Peruvian citizen in 2015 and holds dual citizenship of the United States and Peru.
Boluarte said that Leo XIV "chose to become our citizen, live with us, and keep the faith, culture, and dreams of this country in mind."
Boluarte wrote, "He (the Pope) became a Peruvian citizen in 2015, reflecting his deep love for Peru, where he devoted most of his religious life to serving the cause of the most humble people. On our land, he sowed hope, walked alongside those most in need of help, and shared the joy of our people."
