Iran: Communicating and Cooperating With Close Allies to Ensure Safe Passage through the Strait of Hormuz

Iran stated that it is actively communicating with its “close friends,” including our country, to ensure the safe passage of ships through the Strait of Hormuz.

The Iranian Embassy in Malaysia issued a statement pointing out that this move is in response to the “military aggression” by the United States and Israel, which has led to rising tensions in the Middle East and a broad range of economic impacts.

The statement said that countries, especially those in Southeast Asia, have already felt the impacts of rising oil prices and supply chain disruptions, which stem from concerns about threats to the Strait.

It noted the possibility of prolonged instability, triggering concerns over economic security and energy reliability in these regions.

“In light of these developments, Iran is actively cooperating with its close allies to address the current situation and ensure the safe passage of ships.”

“It is worth noting that Malaysian Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Anwar recently had a call with Iranian President Pezeshkian to discuss efforts aimed at alleviating the energy crisis that has been exacerbated by ongoing conflicts.”

The statement noted that such diplomatic dialogues highlight Iran’s commitment to maintaining peace and stability in maritime trade.

The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most important waterways and a key maritime chokepoint. Roughly one-fifth of the world’s oil and a significant portion of liquefied natural gas pass through here.

The embassy also commented on reports that the United States is currently considering occupying or blockading Kharg Island. Kharg Island is home to one of Iran’s main oil terminal stations. Such action would aim to put pressure on Tehran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz.

The embassy continued, stating that although military control over local facilities like Kharg Island is important, it does not equate to controlling the entire Strait of Hormuz.

“Iran has about 1,500 miles of coastline, which allows us to exert influence even without direct control over the facilities. Therefore, any U.S. ground invasion of Iranian islands would create regional security uncertainty and disrupt global energy markets.”

The statement pointed out that the U.S. objective has obviously shifted, now focusing on securing passage through the Strait of Hormuz. The statement also emphasized that Iran is committed to complying with the principles of the UN Charter and recognizes the importance of maritime security.

“We reiterate that non-hostile ships, especially those from countries that do not support military aggression against us, may safely navigate these waters as long as they comply with Iranian regulations and coordinate with our authorities.”
