Cholera Outbreak in Yangon, Myanmar: 500 Hospitalized with Diarrhea

The largest city in Myanmar, Yangon, has experienced a cholera outbreak. Local officials confirmed on the 17th that since August 9, 500 people have been hospitalized due to severe diarrhea, with 149 testing positive in rapid cholera tests, and 9 cases formally confirmed as infected with Vibrio cholerae by the National Health Laboratory.

According to an AFP report, Yangon Region Social Affairs Minister Bo Htay said this is the first official confirmation that the outbreak involves cholera, more than a week after the first batch of patients were hospitalized.

After over five years of civil war, Myanmar's infrastructure and healthcare system continue to be under pressure. Local health personnel have now launched epidemiological monitoring and preventive measures in affected areas to control the spread of the outbreak.

One 92-year-old patient has died after being hospitalized for diarrhea, but Myanmar's state media quoted officials as saying the patient's cause of death was attributed to pre-existing heart and lung conditions, rather than cholera directly.

Cholera is mainly transmitted through contaminated food or water. Patients may experience severe diarrhea, which can be fatal within hours if not promptly treated. The World Health Organization (WHO) describes cholera as a "global public health threat" and says it reflects issues of social and economic inequality.
