On the 15th, the High Court of Peru sentenced former President Humala and his wife Heredia to 15 years in prison for money laundering.
The court stated that the sentence against Humala would be executed immediately.
The trial judge indicated that the Humala couple concealed funds provided by Brazil's largest construction company, Odebrecht, during the 2011 election and used them to purchase real estate. It was determined that the Humala couple benefited illegally during the campaign, and both were found guilty of money laundering, receiving a 15-year prison sentence.
The court also sentenced Heredia's brother Ilan to 12 years in prison in absentia and issued an arrest order for Heredia, who was similarly judged in absentia.
Heredia later sought asylum at the Brazilian Embassy in Peru.
Humala will be transferred to a prison in the capital, Lima, to serve his sentence. According to Peruvian law, Humala still has the right to appeal while serving his sentence.
Humala served as President of Peru from 2011 to 2016. In July 2017, the Peruvian judiciary decided to implement an 18-month preventive detention against the Humala couple due to suspicions of money laundering and other charges. Previous investigations by Peruvian prosecutors indicated that the Humala couple allegedly benefited illegally from Odebrecht's construction projects.
