(Kuching, 18th) Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari stated that so-called synthetic timber, also known as engineered wood, formed by combining fibers, can serve as an alternative material for construction purposes.
He said: "As is well known, synthetic timber is made by combining wood fibers with other chemical materials. Although a small amount of carbon is needed during the manufacturing process, its carbon emissions can be mitigated and controlled."
Abang Johari made these remarks last night (November 17) at a hotel here, while officiating the opening dinner of the '2025 International Conference on Forest Plantation Research and Innovation (ICFPRI)'.
Engineered wood, also referred to as mass timber, composite wood, manufactured wood, or manufactured panels, is a type of composite material made by binding wood strips, particles, fibers, veneers, or panels with adhesives or other fastening methods.
Against this backdrop, he hopes scientists and experts can find ways to boost oxygen production and strengthen forest ecosystems, especially in tropical regions—which possess abundant sunlight and rainfall, are suitable for rapid growth, and can become an important element in global efforts to tackle climate change.
He said: "I hope the Sarawak Forestry Department (FDS) can establish research networks with counterparts around the world and collaborate to meet global demand, especially under the United Nations (UN) agenda, to create a better future for the next generation."
Other attendees included Deputy Minister for Urban Planning, Land Administration and Environment Datuk Len Talif Salleh; Deputy Minister for Energy and Environmental Sustainability Datuk Dr Hazland Abang Hipni; and Sarawak Forestry Department Director Datu Hamden Mohammad.
