Silent for 12,000 Years: Ethiopia's Hayli Gubbi Volcano Erupts

Published at Nov 25, 2025 04:13 pm
The Hayli Gubbi volcano, located near Ethiopia’s Erta Ale volcano in the northeast of the country, experienced a violent eruption on the 23rd, with volcanic ash lingering in the sky for an extended period.

This is the first eruption of Mount Hayli Gubbi after nearly 12,000 years of dormancy.

The area around the Erta Ale volcano features active lava lakes and is a local tourist attraction. Following the eruption, a large amount of black smoke appeared, plunging the region into a semi-dark state.

Local residents reported that smoke and ash from the eruption covered the sky, and tremors could still be felt in the surrounding areas.

Local government authorities indicated that no reports of casualties due to the eruption have been received so far. Relevant departments and experts have advised residents to take necessary protective measures.

The Toulouse Volcanic Ash Advisory Center (VAAC) in France stated that the volcanic ash cloud has drifted to Yemen, Oman, India, and northern Pakistan.
